Ramsey is a city in Anoka County, Minnesota. U.S. Routes 10 / 169 (co-signed) and Minnesota State Highway 47 are two of the main arterial routes in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.7 square miles (77.0 km²), of which, 28.8 square miles (74.6 km²) of it is land and 0.9 square miles (2.5 km²) of it (3.19%) is water. The elevation is 879 ft (268 m) above sea level.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18,510 people, 5,906 households, and 5,102 families residing in the city. The population density was 642.9 people per square mile (248.2/km²). There were 5,946 housing units at an average density of 206.5/sq mi (79.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.80% White, 0.31% African American, 0.45% Native American, 1.00% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.

There were 5,906 households out of which 49.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.8% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 13.6% were non-families. 8.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.13 and the average family size was 3.33.

In the city the population was spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 35.5% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 2.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $68,988, and the median income for a family was $70,926. Males had a median income of $43,898 versus $31,212 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,057. About 1.3% of families and 1.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.1% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

RAMSEY, first permanently settled in 1850, was organized in 1857, being then named Watertown; but in November 1858, this township was renamed in honor of Alexander Ramsey, the first governor of Minnesota Territory, 1849-53, and later the second governor of this state, 1850-63. The city was incorporated on November 12, 1974.
