Geography:

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 273.9 km² (105.8 mi²). 253.5 km² (97.9 mi²) of it is land and 20.4 km² (7.9 mi²) of it (7.43%) is water.

Demographics:

As of the census ² of 2000, there were 360 people, 172 households, and 104 families residing in the township. The population density was 1.4/km² (3.7/mi²). There were 611 housing units at an average density of 2.4/km² (6.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.94% White, 0.56% African American, 0.83% Native American, and 1.67% from two or more races.

There were 172 households out of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 4.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.65.

In the township the population was spread out with 18.9% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 40.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 106.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 111.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $44,167, and the median income for a family was $50,917. Males had a median income of $35,313 versus $22,083 for females. The per capita income for the township was $29,249. None of the population or families were below the poverty line.

History:

LUTSEN Township was named by its most prominent citizen, Carl A. A. Nelson, for a town in Prussian Saxony, made memorable by the battle there, 1632, in which the renowned Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden, lost his life. The village in section 33 has had a post office since 1890. It is known for it resorts and ski lodges.
