LEONARD, a city in Dudley Township, sections 8 and 9,
was named for Leonard French, first child of an early settler, George H.
French, who became a merchant of this village. It was incorporated as a
village on June 12, 1922; French had a log house trading post store with
the post office, which began in 1899, on the shore of Four-legged Lake.
The Soo Line established a station there in 1911.
