According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²), all land.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 363 people, 154 households, and 91 families residing in the city. The population density was 62.3/km² (161.6/mi²). There were 193 housing units at an average density of 33.1/km² (85.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.90% White, 0.28% Native American, 0.28% Asian, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.10% of the population.

There were 154 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 107.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $47,083. Males had a median income of $31,346 versus $27,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,191. About 9.2% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.1% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over.

History:

LANCASTER is a city on the border of Poppleton and Granville Townships; it was incorporated as a village on September 30, 1905; the post office was first called Lanerow, 1903, changing to Lancaster in 1904 when the Soo Line came through and named for a railroad official believed to have come from Lancashire County, England. The first business was a hotel built by Bernard Johnson, followed by three grain elevators.

Aspen Parkland Landscape Phone: (218) 436-2427 Links with the Aspen Parkland Landscape in Manitoba. Ecological classification with various habitats. Kittson County is 50% in the Aspen Parkland Landscape and 50% in the Red River Prairie.
Caribou State Wildlife Management Area Phone: (218) 436-2427 Web: www.dnr.state.mn.us/wmas North of County Rd 4 on County 51. Three camping sites are posted with camping permitted signs. Just under 14,000 acres. There have been sightings of Elk, Bear & Timber Wolves. An example of the Aspen Parkland Landscape in NW Minnesota. This WMA is open to public hunting, trapping, hiking, berry picking and wildlife viewing.
Joe River State Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Phone: (218) 379-3205 Web: www.dnr.state.mn.us/wmas Approx. 15 miles NE of Lancaster, near Canadian border. 160 acre marsh - grassland. Great place to view a variety of waterfowl, including Ruddy Ducks. Limited opportunities for waterfowl, Sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian partridge hunting. Muskrat, mink, raccoon, and fox offer some trapping.
Skull Lake State Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Phone: (218) 436-2427 Web: www.dnr.state.mn.us/wmas East of Lancaster off of County Rd 4. Primitive camping sites, free with first come, first serve availability. Camping areas are identified with "Camping Permitted" signs. 7,500 acres of unique topography, unique upland prairie. Elk, Bear and Timber Wolves have been spotted in this region. Cross-country skiing opportunities available. This is the only WMA in Kittson County where blueberries have been found. Hunting opportunities for grouse and deer are excellent. Snowmobile - A groomed snowmobile trail runs through the unit.

USGA course rating 34.0. USGA slope rating 114. Scenic, rather hilly layout with the first six fairways along the river. Tee off on 8 & 9 over water. Beautifully groomed fairways and large greens averaging 5000 sq. ft. Clubhouse and 300 yard driving range adjacent to course. Challenging course and a joy to play.
Kittson County Trail Phone: (218) 843-2737 Parking at the Hallock Eagles Club on US Highway 75, also in Lake Bronson, Humboldt, Kennedy, Lancaster and Pembina Snowmobile - Groomed trail runs throughout Kittson County and connects with Lake Bronson State Park, Pelan and McTrail System Trails. Trail features Red River flat prairie and wooded wilderness with deer, moose and other wildlife. Access to good ungroomed riding.

Very scenic setting along the river and wooded areas. Snowmobiling and snowshoeing. 287 acres, playground, summer nature interpretation, picnicking, golf and cross country skiing. Groceries and restaurant close by. 28 camping units, electrical hookups, showers, flush toilets, dump station.
