Geography:

Kelliher is a city in Beltrami County, Minnesota. State Highway 72 serves as the major arterial in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (2.80%) is water. The elevation is 1,358 ft (414 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there were 294 people, 121 households, and 61 families residing in the city. The population density was 140.9 people per square mile (54.3/km²). There were 140 housing units at an average density of 67.1/sq mi (25.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.52% White, 6.12% Native American, and 1.36% from two or more races.

There were 121 households out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.8% were non-families. 47.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 29.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 3.26.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 19.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 26.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 81.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $20,625, and the median income for a family was $33,958. Males had a median income of $30,313 versus $16,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,386. About 12.7% of families and 19.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.0% of those under the age of eighteen and 23.2% of those sixty five or over.

History:

Kelliher Township and its city, at the end of a branch railway built for lumbering, were named for A. O. Kelliher, a former agent here for lumber companies. The city was incorporated as a village on October 3, 1903, the year its post office was established; in 1892 Ulysses (Jess) and John Freestone filed stone and timber claims, and it is Jess's claim that became the site of Kelliher; in 1897 the claim was sold to a Weyerhaeuser man, who in turn sold the land to the Crookston Lumber Company, a large landholder in the Bullhead Lake area. The city was platted by A. O. Kelliher for George S. Eddy of the Crookston Lumber Company. It had a station of the Minnesota and International Railway.
