Jordan Minnesota Community Guide

Living along the wooded bluffs and rolling hills of Scott County, the community of Jordan enjoys that warm country feeling of a small town while being only minutes from the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Travel time to Bloomington is 20 minutes and downtown Minneapolis is only 30 miles away. Some of the Twin Cities' leading attractions, including the Renaissance Festival, Mystic Lake Casino and Valleyfair are all within 15 minutes of Jordan. Jordan is closer yet to the Scott County Fair, championship golf, campgrounds and numerous recreational parks.

Jordan is a city in Scott County, Minnesota. U.S. Highway 169; and State Highways 21 and 282 are three of the main routes in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.8 km²), of which, 2.6 square miles (6.8 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.76%) is water. The elevation is 771 ft (235 m) above sea level.

JORDAN, a city in sections 18, 19, 20, and 30 of Sand Creek Township, platted by Thomas A. and William Holmes in 1854, established in 1856 with the opening of the Sand Creek post office, incorporated as a village February 26, 1872, and as a city March 11, 1891, was named by William Holmes for "the River Jordan in Palestine. The name was given at the end of a somewhat angry and prolonged discussion amongst the citizens as to what the name should be" (Stennett, Place Names of the Chicago and Northwestern Railways, p. 180). Sawmill owner William Holmes was postmaster; he was born in 1853 in Ohio, died in 1873, and was the brother of Thomas Holmes of Shakopee. The post office name changed to Jordan in 1872; it had a station of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad.
