HUBBARD Township, notable for its large prairie, was
named, like the county, for Gen. Hubbard; it was formerly named Manter.
A post office in section 20 began as Manter in 1880 in Cass County with
John W. Jarvis, postmaster; he was born in 1846 in Ohio, came to
Minnesota in 1880, opened a store in 1882, which housed the post office,
moved to Park Rapids in 1894, and served as judge of probate court,
1893-95, and county auditor, 1895-97. The post office was transferred to
Hubbard County in 1884, John Jarvis remained as postmaster, and the name
was changed to Hubbard, 1884-1965, although called Brighton in 1886; it
became a rural branch, 1965-68.
