Geography:

Hatfield is a city in Pipestone County, Minnesota. County Road 16 is the main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.76 square miles (7.15 km2), all of it land. The elevation is 1,683 ft (513 m) above sea level.

Demographics:

As of the census of 2010, there were 54 people, 20 households, and 12 families residing in the city. The population density was 19.6 inhabitants per square mile (7.6/km2). There were 23 housing units at an average density of 8.3 per square mile (3.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White.

There were 20 households of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, and 40.0% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.67.

The median age in the city was 30.5 years. 37% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26% were from 25 to 44; 13.1% were from 45 to 64; and 16.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.1% male and 51.9% female.

History:  

HATFIELD, a city in Burke and Gray Townships, founded in 1880, has a name that is borne by a township and village in Massachusetts and by villages of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and other states. A local story of its naming says that in 1879 one of the men on a railroad grading crew had his hat blown off by the wind a number of times, and after retrieving it from the field, he suggested the name "hat field." The city was incorporated as a village on September 9, 1919; it had a station of the Southern Minnesota Railroad, and the post office began in 1880.
