History:

EAST LAKE, Spalding Township, was named for its location east of Wild Rice Lake. Anthony Spicola, its first settler, owned a general store and provided post office service for four months at his own expense, delivering the mail on foot; after the postal route was approved, he ran it out of his store for 42 years. The village had a sawmill and a Soo Line station in section 20.
