DAWSON, a railway city near the center of Riverside Township, platted in 1884, incorporated as a village on November 12, 1884, and as a city in 1911, was named in honor of William Dawson, a banker of St. Paul, who was one of the proprietors of its site. He was born in County Cavan, Ireland, October 1, 1825; came to America in 1846; settled in St. Paul in 1861, was its mayor, 1878-81, and died there February 19, 1901. The original site of the city was in section 21 on the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad, purchased and platted by the Dawson Townsite Company in 1884 and filed in 1892. The post office began in 1884 with Charles J. Coghlan, postmaster and newspaper publisher.
