History:

COTTAGE GROVE Township was settled in 1844 and organized in May 1858; its city in section 12, bearing the same name, in allusion to the mingled tracts of groves and prairies, was platted in April 1871 by J. P. Furber, with J. W. Furber, surveyor, four miles from the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad station of the same name, on 40 acres; the city was incorporated on July 21, 1965. The post office began in 1849, with Joseph W. Forbes, postmaster. The farm community of East Cottage Grove and the railroad village of Langdon were transformed from rural community to "bedroom" suburb by 1958 with the Panorama City addition in 1955, the (Orrin) Thompson Grove additions in 1958 and 1959, and Thompson Grove Estates additions in 1960-70. The city absorbed the township, which then ceased to exist.
