Guide to Comfrey Minnesota

Comfrey is a city in Brown and Cottonwood counties of Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.47 square miles (1.22 km²), all of it land. The elevation is 1,122 ft (342 m).

COMFREY, a city on the south line of Bashaw Township, sections 34 and 35, also associated with Cottonwood County. It was incorporated as a village on February 19, 1900, and platted in 1902 by the Western Town Lot Company, taking its name from a nearby post office, which had been established in 1877. That had been so named "by A. W. Pederson, the first postmaster, from the plant, comfrey . . . that he had met with in his reading" (William H. Stennett, Origin of Place Names of the Chicago and Northwestern Railways). The hotel was built in 1899 and razed in 1940; a large creamery operated from 1899 to 1955. W. R. Hodges, the first newspaper publisher, built a two-story building, the second floor becoming known as Hodges Hall, providing stage entertainment.
