According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.5 km˛ (1.3 mi˛), all land.

There were 749 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% were non-families. 39.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $29,583, and the median income for a family was $43,162. Males had a median income of $30,924 versus $23,088 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,921. About 7.0% of families and 13.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.5% of those under age 18 and 21.5% of those age 65 or over.
ADA, a city in sections 8, 9, 16, and 17 of McDonaldsville Township and the county seat, founded in 1874 and incorporated as a village February 9, 1881, was named in honor of a daughter of William H. Fisher of St. Paul, then attorney and superintendent of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, under whose superintendency this line of the Red River valley was constructed. A biographic notice of him is given in the chapter of Polk County, where his name is borne by Fisher Township and village. Ada Nelson Fisher died at the age of six years, in 1880, but this prosperous and beautiful village and the county perpetuate her name and memory. The post office began as MacDonaldsville in 1874, the postmaster being Finnian McDonald on his farm, until it was moved to the village in 1876 and the name changed; the village had a Great Northern Railway station.
